Antonio Sami speaking on the second day for the Scouts men:
'We had the young Mauao Warriors team in the morning. This looked like a good opportunity for a win, but our team was focussed on maintaining a high level and proceeded to keep foot on throat. In the 1st set we were able to run combinations and try different approaches to offense - running C-slides (spread middle attacks) with Judah and a lot of B-double combos with LJ and Isaac. 2nd set was of a similar tone. LJ took to the aces role completing 8 serves in a row (3 of them being aces). 3rd set the boys kept the same level of play and finished off the Mauao team for a 3-0 win.
Saxton storm were our opponents next. The scouts team carried their enthusiasm, fire and spirit into this game and it showed in the results. 25-17, 25-15, 25-20 resulting in another 3-0 win for the day.'
Hugh Hawkey on day two for the Rangers men:
'For the second day, the Rangers had first game of the day - this time against the South Auckland Orcas. After coming off a late night, we struggled through the first set, more or less just going through the motions. The second set saw some changes in pace and the Rangers were able to build a buffer that would later be closed, and ultimately lost. The third was similar with us staying almost point for point and losing our grip on the game near the end. The game resulted in a 3-0 loss and overall wasn't the best effort from the team.
The second game against Shirley was more difficult. The first set was close with us building a buffer that would later be chased down. The second set was also an absolute nail biter, however against Shirley took the set win. In the third set we managed to build a four points buffer, which was eventually chased down with victory once again slipping through our grasp. Overall, a 3-0 loss to the eventual pool leaders.
Looking back on the day, the team was quite happy with our performances, and are keen for some sleep and to see what tomorrow can bring.'
Natalya Taylor on the second day for the Rangers women: 'Today the ladies had a tough start - coming up against Shirley B and losing a hard-fought match 3-1. The first set was 21-25. The second set was 21-25 yet again with a few too many net faults and passing errors. In the third set we fought back to win 25-21, while our blocking still needs some work. In the fourth set we lost 17-25 despite an awesome pick up by Niamh, great blocking from Laura, and a 94% serving completion rate during that set.
After a tough morning we knew we had to step our game up to win a game. Thankfully we pulled through with a 3-1 win over Rotovegas. The first set was a stunner winning 25–4 with awesome energy levels. Second set we lost 20-25 with more work needed on covering. Third set we came back to win 25-22, coming back with a run of 8 points to take the win however it was bit close for our liking with a few too many unforced errors which were easily fixable. The fourth set we won 25-21. Great finish to end on a high for the day to take us into the third day! Some of the girls are feeling the aches and pains so need a solid rest and recovery before a 9am morning game.'
